Yachts and films. They are exquisite partners. Consider the thrilling speed shots of Wally Yachts’ Wallypower 118 in “The Island,” starring in the role of Renovatio alongside Ewan McGregor. Or the Sunseeker Predator in “Casino Royale,” White Knight in “The Bourne Identity,” Helios 2 in “Syriana,” or R Rendezvous in “Donnie Brasco.” All wonderful yachts in wonderful films.
In this, the 68th year of the Cannes Film Festival slated for May 13-24, 2015, it would be simply fabulous to secure your own private luxury yacht charter for the week. Think of all the iconic locations less than a few hours cruise from the port. You would undoubtedly find yourself in very good company, in beautiful places, on board a luxurious yacht. It may sound like a film script, but it is, in fact, a real possibility. Consider this simple itinerary.
Day 1: As with any new nest, look around, get settled, and prepare to enjoy a week on board your private luxury yacht during the iconic film festival. A star-studded history and a brilliant future merge here every year during this event. Catch some sun, take a short swim, and get dressed for a wonderful dinner. While the official screening schedule for individual films is not posted until a week prior to the event, it is certain there will be many enticing options every evening, so keep your schedule flexible to ensure you are in Cannes on the days of your favorite film showings.
Day 2: Sail out to Île Sainte-Marguerite, the island where The Man in the Iron Mask was filmed, then cruise south to St. Tropez, famous for exquisite blue water, beautiful beaches, and exceptional cuisine. You may even want to tender in, find a white Mercedes Roadster and make like Audrey Hepburn and Albert Finney in “Two For the Road,” driving into town to celebrate. Stop in at Rondini for a pair of authentic Tropezienne sandals. Then saunter through the narrow streets of Place de la Garonne, Place des Lices, Rue Gambetta and Rue Allard, scooping up indulgent designer frocks and stylish trinkets. Finish like Brigitte Bardot on Pampelonne Beach with a cocktail at the club La Plage des Jumeaux. Come for the cocktails and the view, stay for the fabulous dinner. Three Michelin stars cannot be wrong.
Day 3: Head back north to Sainte Raphael for a quiet cove, dip in the water, or scuba excursion. The Gulf of St. Raphael is thought to be the birthplace of diving in France, with more than 40 recognized dive sites worthy of exploration. Snorkeling, sailing, or just lounging about the deck of the yacht are all viable options. Consider having a copy of the film “Lolita” to view, as much of it took place in this very spot.
Day 4: Slowly cruise back to Cannes, with a beach stop for lunch in a private bay or on board, then prepare for another night of glitterati at the Cannes Film Festival, with dinner at Le Palme d’Or, or Le Park 45 at The Grand. Afterward, even though Jimmy’z is now closed, Le Baoli along the Cannes Croisette is wide open. It may be a long night, filled with a dazzling club atmosphere, lots of Champagne, and film-worthy moments.
Day 5: Wander up the gorgeous coast to
. Stroll the streets as James Bond did in “Never Say Never,” “Diamonds are Forever,” or the cast of “La Cage aux Folles” did during filming there. Then, toast to Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald for bringing celebrity to this local gem of a spot. Ernest Hemingway, Pablo Picasso, Dorothy Parker, James Thurber, and dozens more escaped to Antibes for fun and frolic with the elite. Now, it is your turn.
Day 6: It’s a short hop to Moncao for another peek at a dazzling lifestyle, the incredible Casino at Monte Carlo, and the simply indescribable shopping options. If you do come, make sure you’ve packed something extra special for the Casino, as they do not allow jeans and require jackets. Lounge about on the yacht a bit and soak in the experience, while imagining it as the set for the film “Ocean’s Twleve” as well as many James Bond films.
Day 7: Return to Cannes and indulge in one last, leisurely day on board your private yacht. Prepare to mingle among the crowds and watch the top films. Gentlemen, it is time for your best Sean Connery, Daniel Craig, or Pierce Brosnan impersonation, donning an appropriately tailored suit and planning for perfection. Ladies, pick your favorite little black dress and sexiest heels. It’s one of the best and brightest party nights anywhere on the planet.
