Whilst Pebble Beach is best known as a world-class golfing destination, its charms reach far further than the fairway. Occupying a manicured coastal corner of the spectacular Monterey Peninsula, the resort is home to some of the West Coast’s swankiest homes, hotels, shops and restaurants. But life on paradise is as active as it is indulgent with lush patches of forest to explore, equestrian facilities, sports centers, whale watching and of course, yachting.
Pebble Beach’s main attraction remains Golf Links where you’re likely to be putting alongside the likes of Tiger Woods and Dustin Johnson, but even to non-golfing pros, the course is breathtakingly beautiful, jutting out into the Pacific. On occasion a bagpiper can even be found roaming the course, paying homage to the Scottish influenced design.
Close by, The Inn at Spanish Bay, a luxurious hotel complex, is the best spot for a casual sunset cocktail with wonderful views over the green. There are several great dining options on-site too from the relaxed Lobby Lounge, to the lively Hawaiian menu at Roy’s and gourmet Italian at Peppoli.
Casa Palmero also makes the most of the stunning backdrop and its close proximity to the golf course. The romantic, Mediterranean-style estate, set within a secluded enclave of tropical gardens, is often rated as one of the Top Resorts in Northern California for its impeccable concierge services and facilities (though its worth noting there’s no restaurant directly on the property’s grounds). The heated courtyard swimming pool, edged by wicker sunbeds is a tranquil place to soak up the sun, or else curl up in the lounge with a good book before sinking into a state of even deeper relaxation at The Spa.
The Spa at Pebble Beach is an elegant oasis of calm and one of the only 48 spas in the world to have received the coveted Forbes Five-Star award. It offers a range of treatments and day packages to suit all audiences – try The Palmero, involving a delicious smelling papaya-pineapple scrub, hydrating propolis wrap and a coconut oil head massage. There’s also a popular juice bar and café where you can pick up a light lunch and snacks in between therapies.
The Lodge is one of the oldest residences at Pebble Beach and has fortunately retained a nostalgic charm and grandeur. The old-style tavern, The Tap Room attracts a particularly sophisticated crowd, whilst the hotel’s Stillwater Bar & Grill is the best for seafood (try the divine butter-poached Alaskan King Crab accompanied by glazed baby vegetables).
If you’re looking for something more rustic, the Stillwater Yacht Club regularly holds relaxed BBQs throughout the summer for its members and friends on the seafront, providing the perfect opportunity to socialize with the glamorous yachting crowd and pick up tips on the best hidden beaches along the coastline. The Beach & Tennis Club is also a popular hangout for the jet set with first-class recreational facilities including several tennis courts, a gym, swimming pool and a stunning glass encased restaurant on the edge of Stillwater cove. If you’ve forgotten to pack your sports wear, there are multiple boutiques selling stylish apparel and accessories, whilst the Spanish Bay Gift Shop offers more casual resort wear and exquisite local artisan products.
On an extended stay, the rest of the peninsular is worth exploring for its wild, dramatic landscapes. Equestrian trails thread through the depths of the beautiful Del Monte Forest or else take a convertible Lexus for a test along the legendary 17-mile drive, passing by Fanshell Overlook where you can observe seals basking on the white sand beach below. Better yet, enjoy a privileged viewing spot of the seals and whales from on board your luxury yacht charter whilst sipping a cool glass of champagne. Life doesn’t get much better than this.
