Ah, Barcelona… Its fine dining scene is truly exceptional and one-of-a-kind. Featuring both traditional and culturally-rooted culinary gems, as well as flavors from around the world, it’s impossible to feel uninspired while staying in Barcelona and contemplating where to go next for an unforgettable meal. While you won’t have to go looking far for traditional Catalan dishes and flavors, many of the restaurants here take the best from both worlds – the old and the new.
On top of that, there’s an impressive number of Michelin-starred restaurants in Barcelona with 22 altogether. Whether you are after the flavors of the Mediterranean or want to experience something more exotic, such as cutting-edge Japanese cuisine, Barcelona has got it all. We’ve made sure to include five exceptional fine-dining restaurants in Barcelona for you to explore during your stay in this beautiful city.
Located in the 5-star Mandarin Oriental Barcelona, Moments is its signature fine dining restaurant that is not only one of the best in Barcelona but in the whole of Spain as well. The restaurant’s operation is overseen by the acclaimed Catalan chef Carme Ruscadella, whose credentials are impressive, as she’s earned seven Michelin stars over the course of her career. Not many chefs can say the same. Two of these Michelin stars belong to her Barcelona venture, Moments. The restaurant’s offerings include Catalan-based dishes like Iberian pork with parsnips and raisins, and sea bass in a mild curry.
At the same time, the establishment offers so much more than just an excellent dinner, as it’s a unique gastronomic experience that cannot be missed while in Barcelona. The fine culinary journey is accompanied by the beauty of Patricia Urquiola’s exclusive designs within the interior, where the luxurious golden and amber hues of the dining room create a relaxing and magical atmosphere for full enjoyment of your dining experience. In addition, a window onto the kitchen provides diners with an attractive view of the culinary staff at work. For a truly unique experience opt for the private chef’s table that can accommodate up to 15 guests and it is situated behind a curtain to offer complete privacy while allowing you to enjoy chef Raül Balam’s, who is the son of Carme Ruscadella, skillful culinary masterpieces.
Enoteca Paco Pérez
There isn’t a lack of Michelin-starred restaurants in Barcelona. This notion is proven by yet another fine dining establishment awarded two Michelin stars, Enoteca Paco Pérez. This light-filled restaurant is all about pure Mediterranean flavours. The three basic pillars of Mediterranean cuisine, olive oil, wheat and wine, all feature abundantly on the menu, where acclaimed chef Paco Pérez and his team create dishes that highlight the freshness of the sea and the essence of farm and mountain produce.
The restaurant is located within the exquisite Hotel Arts Barcelona, where the sophisticated, peaceful and intimate dining room is inspired by its airy coastal setting. A refreshing white palette is combined with light wood furnishings. This creates a soothing backdrop where culinary experience takes centre stage. The Enoteca experience is taken up a notch when in the summer months a seafront terrace welcomes guests to enjoy personalized service and some of the finest dishes in all of Barcelona. Each dish is an art piece within itself and the flavors follow suit. Hamachi fish tartar with umami touches brings unexpected delights to your palate while Iberian ham showcases deeply-rooted tradition and local culture.
Showcasing exceptional molecular gastronomy, Disfrutar has earned a stable position in Barcelona’s dining scene. First opening its doors back in 2014, the restaurant has attracted worldwide acclaim since. The space feels clean, modern and highly sophisticated without being pretentious – something especially important considering it’s yet another Michelin-starred restaurant. All staff make you feel welcome and will guarantee an exceptional experience. Don’t expect white tablecloths or gloves. Instead, it’s a bright, relaxed, and airy space where the food does all the talking. And it speaks volumes because it is not a traditional dining experience. It’s so much more than just a row of ingredients artfully plated, as smoke, fire, ice all feature prominently, creating a performance you will not so easily forget.
Barcelona’s exceptional dining scene isn’t only about Iberian ham, Mediterranean cuisine, and local flavors. In fact, one of the most widely renowned restaurants in the city is actually one that showcases exceptional Japanese cuisine and it’s Koy Shunka, yet another Michelin-starred establishment. The menu is remarkably extensive here. It’s recommended that you order at least several different dishes to get an idea of all the incredible things they do here with sushi.
It wouldn’t be an overstatement to say that the Michelin star that the restaurant has earned is more than deserved because the culinary experience here is truly out of this world. Melt-in-your-mouth nigiri deserves its own special praise, and here, everything is done with utmost precision, control and care. This is especially important when working with seafood where even the slightest changes in temperature or a flawed cut can devastate the result. But worry not, it’s not without reason that Koy Shunka retains its Michelin-starred glory – it really is that good, and a true must for anyone appreciating Japanese cuisine.
Caelis Romain Fornell
Toulouse-born chef Romain Fornell opened Caelis in 2004 and earned a Michelin star just a year after its debut. Ever since, the restaurant has maintained its first-class status among the restaurants in Barcelona worldwide. The establishment offers contemporary cuisine with a unique twist which stems from chef Fornell’s own interpretations. The resulting cuisine is always unique and unexpected while 100% admiration-worthy.
With a passion for the finest and freshest produce, as well as a hunger for innovation and challenges, the skillful team over at Caelis create true masterpieces on the plate. Organic roast leek in charcoal with Pyrenees caviar – now, does that not make you want to book a table here immediately? Hand-cut steak tartare with ice mustard pearls is equally mouthwateringly good. And just like the fantastic items on the menu, the dining room also exudes a 5-star atmosphere that allows you to have a relaxed yet highly exciting evening.
