The 2016 Monaco Yacht Show is basking in the limelight of another extraordinary show, illustrating the true nature of its iconic status: honoring legacy while embracing the future. In the regal atmosphere of Port Hercule, surrounded by the sparkling hillside villas, epic hotels, and extraordinary dining and shopping diversions, there is no event that is more representative of the yachting lifestyle. That is why The Best of Yachting’s Steve Johnson was in attendance. Here, for your convenience, is the 360° view.
Opening with a Gala for a Stylish Crowd
The invitation only inaugural gala on Tues., Sept. 27, opened the show, bringing together 350-400 guests at the stunning Salle Belle Époque in the Hôtel Hermitage. The guest list invited CEOs of the yachting industry and private clientele. The glittering gold and crystal of the room along with the bejeweled attendees and brilliant smiles set the stage for the 3rd annual MYS Superyacht Awards. The MYS/RINA award went to Wider Yachts for Genesi, the exterior design award to Perini Navi’s Sybaris, and both the interior design award and the finest new superyacht award at MYS 2016 went to Heesen’s Galactica Super Nova.
Rocking the Boat with Sir Elton John
If you want to throw a successful party, invite the rock royalty of Sir Elton John. The Ferretti Group did just that to open a private preview weekend on the water at the Yacht Club de Monaco. Lining the length of Quai Louis II and perched on the yacht club terraces, an ebullient crowd gathered for a remarkable evening.
Surrounded by 30 stylish yachts bearing the Ferretti Group brands CRN, Custom Line, Pershing, and Riva, 1,000 guests enjoyed an epic performance featuring Rocket Man, Daniel, Crocodile Rock, Circle of Life, and Your Song. Adding to the magic, an Aquariva Super was the prize in a silent auction, the color to be chosen by Elton John himself, with proceeds going to earthquake support in Italy. The megastar departed the dock, boarding his own private Riva, putting an emotional punctuation mark on the “Blue Wonderful” event.
Owner’s Club Lunch On Board Galactica Super Nova
Partnering with NetJets and Boats International, a scrumptious luncheon gathered an influential group on board double MYS Superyacht award winner Galactica Super Nova. The event highlighted advances and benefits of combining NetJets travel with the superyacht experience, offering brilliant strategies for the luxury experience, in addition to sociable networking with an incredibly posh setting.
Additional Announcements of Note
The introduction of automobiles to the MYS lineup proved successful, as the car deck attracted an enthusiastic crowd, scheduling a full roster of test drives from Rolls Royce, Lamborghini, Bentley, Ferrari, and McLaren. Armored car specialist Centigon presented models from Range Rover and Mercedes, while Upper Wish, specializing in revolutionary concept business class vehicles, sparked high interest.
Aston Martin found fans intrigued by the AM37, a hand built in house design from collaboration with Quintessence Yachts. Embracing Mulder Design interiors and Aston Martin DNA, the stylish sport yacht and day boat drew applause for its personalization with color palettes and interiors.
Feadship, Nobiskrug, and Oceanco announced advanced technology, adopting augmented and virtual reality features as tools for events and parties, in addition to new builds, charters, and brokerage reports. Feadship’s Future Concept announced an augmented reality edge, Benetti Now broadcast their reduced delivery times, Heesen displayed their virtual reality walk-through, and Fraser Yachts’ ethics-focused award ceremony honored show sales and signings.
Global yacht debuts were heralded from 45 new builds, including Galactica Super Nova, Kamino, Maybe, Vanquish, Elixir, Quinta Essentia, Bijou, Sexy Fish, Sarastar, and Fast & Furious. Nobiskrug launched the streamlined, elegant Motor Yacht Muse, Gulf Craft announced an upsize in production to yachts over 50 meters, with a 175 ft/53 m and 200 ft/61 m build in the process. Lürssen acquired Blohm + Voss, including their six sites and 2,800 staff. Fraser Yachts announced pleasing Q2 numbers, and Royal Huisman announced the signing of a new 81-meter sailing yacht, also talking up its new Dart 65 revealed earlier in the month.
In addition to yacht, rock, and social stars, H.S.H. Prince Albert II was seen out and about, giving interviews and enjoying the show. His discussion in a Superyacht News and Events Interview detailed a new, 6-hectare land extension on the west end of the Principality to add housing and commercial space to accommodate a growing population. The work is expected to begin sometime in 2017.
