As of approximately 10:15 am Australian Eastern Daylight Savings Time, FIA has released a statement officially declaring that the first F1 event for 2020 has been canceled. The board has indicated that the decision to cancel the 2020 Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne was taken as of 9:00 AEDST.
The news comes following the confirmation that a team member of the McLaren Racing Team had tested positive for COVID-19 and the team’s decision to withdraw from the 2020 Australian Grand Prix. This led to a meeting on Thursday night between the FIA and Formula 1 regarding the other nine team principals, eventually reaching the conclusions that the competition shouldn’t go ahead.
The teams now must shift their focus to ensuring that all personnel return home as safely and quickly as possible and that all necessary precautions are taken in line with Government and World Health Organisation guidelines. The statement also announced that all ticket holders will receive a full refund and a further announcement will be made in the coming days or weeks.
