The world of motorsport was rocked by the news in the early hours of May 21 that racing legend Niki Lauda had passed away overnight.  The triple F1 champion had undergone a lung transplant in late 2018. His family released a statement, saying: “With deep sadness, we announce that our beloved Niki has peacefully passed away with his family on Monday.”  The statement paid tribute to “his unique achievements as an athlete and entrepreneur” and said “his tireless zest for action, his straightforwardness and his courage remain. A role model and a benchmark for all of us, he was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather away from the public, and he will be missed.”

Niki Lauda is, sadly, perhaps best known to many as the F1 driver that suffered horrific burns and internal injuries after a massive crash at the 1976 German F1 GP. His relationship with fellow competitor James Hunt, his career, and the crash, were immortalised in the film “Rush”, starring Chris Hemsworth as Hunt and and Daniel Brühl as Lauda.

Niki Lauda was 70 at the time of his passing. The staff and writers here at wish to pass on their respects to Mr Lauda’s family and close friends.

Vale Niki Lauda.
