Thoroughbreds in the automotive world are extremely rare now, but the Italian giant Ferrari seems to carry on its legacy of producing extraordinary cars that are both stunning to look at and are extreme racers as well. The new 488 GTB is a prime example of what Ferrari is capable of creating when it flexes its muscles.

The 488 has been styled to look a lot like its predecessor the 458 but has taken a more subtle approach. The engineers were given the design to work with beforehand and were told to alter the design in the wind tunnel according the most aerodynamically efficient model that could be created. Low pressure areas where created intentionally to increase downforce on the car to help with high speed maneuverability. A movable spoiler reduces the air coefficient drag when the car is travelling at a great momentum.

The chassis on the 488 has been redesigned to incorporate a hydraulic steering assist. This in turn has increased the accuracy of the vehicle and made it more responsive through the corners. The standard carbon ceramic brakes ensure that the driver is able to break as late as possible to maintain maximum speed going into turns.

The interior of the car has also seen an improvement through the use of intelligent ergonomically adept designing. The seats have been created to have a more secure hold of the driver and the passenger which is a necessity considering the performance of the 488. The absence of a foot well divider allows for more freedom within the cabin. Ferrari has also incorporated the passenger into the experience of the 488 by giving them readings of the cars speed and auxiliary readings on a display.

The engine is where the 488 really steps into its stride. The predecessor of the 488 had a naturally aspirated V8 that produced 562 horsepower. The 488 now has a new engine which is a Turbocharged 3.9 liter V8 that produces an astonishing 660 horsepower with a torque figure of 560 lb-ft of torque. The power unit is mated to a 7-speed DCT gearbox to ensure that all the power is effectively delivered to the rear wheels. This results in the 488 having a 0-60mph time of 2.9 seconds and goes on to a top speed of 205 mph. This car in many ways then dwarfs the 458 regarding the overall performance.

The retail price of the Ferrari 488 GTB starts at $274,000.[/vc_column_text][gap size=”20px”][author title=”About the Author”][text_output]
