Opening the 2016 Monaco Yacht Show with a Gala reception, ball, and awards ceremony, Heesen Galactica Super Nova danced away with two honors amid 400 attendees. Recognized as the finest new superyacht on the roster of the show, Perini Navi’s Sybaris took the honor for best interior design exhibiting the most refined and innovative exterior, and Wider Yacht’s Genesi 150 earned the MYS RINA award as the quietest, eco-friendly yacht. A relatively new addition, it was just the third year of the MYS Superyacht Awards.
The star of the show, the 230-foot/70-meter Galactica Super Nova earned the win through a clutch of stellar talent from Espen Øino exterior design, Van Oossanen Dutch Naval Architects, Sinot Yacht Design interiors, Brian Barr’s California Audio Technology, and Sabrina Monteleone’s finishing touch.
Appropriately selected for the award, Galactica Super Nova displays dozens of reasons supporting the choice. Dovetailing speed and efficiency, the yacht is an example of both a fast planing hull and a displacement yacht, cruising across oceans in exquisite comfort and luxury at a 30-knot clip, courtesy of her twin engines, fixed-pitch propellers, and Rolls Royce central booster jet. Galactica Super Nova’s light appetite regarding fuel, another feature considered in her award, comes from the innovative hull design assisted by a streamlined bulbous bow that reduces resistance, with cooperative efforts from the curved stern that takes advantage of pressure driven its way, giving Galactica Super Nova an enviable range of 4,000 nm.
Functional superiority is evident, but Galactica Super Nova is also an indulgent host and versatile entertainer. The owner’s suite, forward on the main deck, stretches across the 39-foot/11.9-meter beam, covered in floor to ceiling onyx panels and outfitted with dual baths, walk in rain shower, and private study, inspiring a spacious, open feel in the serene enclave. A VIP suite on the upper deck is just as luxurious, with a private study tucked in just forward of the sky lounge. Four additional cabins on the lower deck sport luxurious linens, marble en suite baths, and a divine set of high end appointments.
Aft on the main deck, an alfresco lounge overlooks a six-meter infinity pool with skylights fitted into its depth, filtering light onto the deck below, a broad waterfall from the deck above, and swim jets for a serious workout. Forward on the main deck, Galactica Super Nova multi-tasks with ease, performing as a sun deck, a helipad, or even a theater, boasting a 4 x 2.25-meter screen enhanced by CAT’s high performance audio system.
A sundeck protected amidships with broad sliding glass panels that open fore and aft to Jacuzzi and sun pads, a posh formal dining space for 12, dressed to the nines in Hèrmes, Haviland, Baccarat, and Puiforcat, an elegant glass elevator wrapped in a nautilus-like stair, and a 1,550 square foot/144 square meter beach club continue the list of elegant features that earned the prize, raising the bar for the list of 2017 nominees.
